Moving House & Packing Your Boxes: Top Tips
It’s rumoured to be one of the most stressful experiences in life… But how exactly can you make moving house and packing up your belongings as easy as possible? Here are our top three tips:
Tip 1 – Dealing with books and files
It’s a good idea to gather all your books together and sort by size. Group magazines, oversized books and smaller books into individual sections. When filling your cardboard moving boxes, place the big/heavy books at the bottom of a sturdy box, but don’t fill it up to the top.
Depending how heavy the box is, fill it to about a third or half full, and make sure that the books are even and level so that you can pack things on top of them. Cover the books with paper or newspaper and fill the remainder of the box with lighter items like clothes. As an alternative, you could consider archive boxes for books and files. These are strong and durable and have handles and lids specifically designed to help you move large quantities of files and paperwork.
Tip 2 – Consider Plastic crates
Plastic packing boxes are an excellent option for packing up your household items, and they can also be surprisingly cost-effective. They are durable, easy to carry and safe to stack and store. This is also an environmentally friendly option. These boxes are reusable and some suppliers will even accept them being returned, thereby eliminating the need for large quantities of cardboard boxes. Plastic packing crates can be purchased from specialist suppliers or rented by the week from online providers.
Generally, the relevant number of crates can be ordered in advance, and delivered direct to your home. At the end of the rental period the empty crates are collected from your stated collection address. If your belongings are going into storage then your crates could also be secured with security seals.
Tip 3 – Label, Label, Label!
It’s worth taking the time to thoroughly label every cardboard box with a general description of contents. Use a felt pen to show this information as well as stating which room it is to be placed in at the new house. Label on the sides rather than on top, so it can be seen when stacked. If a carton contains breakables then mark it as ‘fragile’ or use ‘fragile’ tape. Draw on arrows for which way up the box should be stored.
And finally… it’s a good idea to keep an inventory list of the contents of each box. This comes in handy if the worst comes to the worst and a box goes missing. You’ll have all the information you need to make a claim for your items.
There we have it! Three top tips of how to make moving day as trouble free as possible. Good luck!
